machine based reasoning

the push + minimal + techno + arctic dub + chill + experimental + ambient video

I was wondering if people here had any favorite free VST plugins/plugin sites.

Although they can be less efficient (sometimes) than the payed alternatives, I think it's a lot of fun collecting crazy VSTs from around the internet (well, at least I like the idea: I don't have that many right now to be honest, stupid virus on my PC).

Hey man. I'm a VST addict... seriously.

KVR VST site is still the best for keeping up on all VST activity. Are you a member of the forum?

Rekkerd.org
is a daily blog on VST releases with a lot of focus on free... and they host a bunch of free stuff too.

Also, StumbleUpon is a cool way to find free VSTs. Are you familiar with it? I think you have use Firefox. Basically, you install the StumbleUpon Firefox plug-in and then type "VST" or "Free VST" into their search variable and it will randomly take you to almost endless user-recommended VST sites.

I also you Google Alerts to feed Google Reader with key words/phrases like "Free VST" but KVR forums and plugin database are really the best way to keep up with the daily releases of new free stuff.

I collect as many free plug-ins as i can. Its like a friend told me once "can never have enough plugs". Hands down my favorite free plug is King Dubby - http://www.lowcoders.fr/ . Although it is a AU it is free and is one of my goto delays...take you straight to Jamaica, no ticket needed....YA MON!
A very nice collection of VST's is www.betabugsaudio.com. Fun little units with very nice GUI's. A nice fun synth is daHornet - http://nusofting.liqihsynth.com/freeplugins.html. Also on this page is a slew of other free stuff. More free fun stuff at http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2&subItem=5.

enjoy

I'm at the opposite side of the spectrum. Nowadays I only use a very small group of selected plugins.
Years ago, when I used to "collect" them, spending hours on the web finding the new free releases every day, I was making very little music.
Now I simply have my go-to list that covers basically any mixing/processing need I have. Plus, I don't use VST Instruments any longer. I just rely on my hw synths, samplers and drum machines. More limited compared to some of the sw stuff out there, but lot more fun to use, IMHO.
I'll post a list of my fave plugins when I'm at the studio later today...

A pretty good and not very well known spectrum analyzer (freeware):

A pdf containing a list with descriptions and links to dozens of freeware VST drum plugins/samplers. Can't remember where I got it from. See attachment.

Here's a link to a free VST BBS that I hadn't see before.

Another cool site: New Age Hippies. Free VSTs and preset/sample downloads. Haven't seen these VSTs before.

Don't know why I didn't mention a site with some different free VSTs. Sure it's only a single developer site but I like some of the ideas at least.
